What's the difference between a gravity wall and a segmental wall?
A gravity wall relies on its own mass and shape to hold back soil — it works for shorter walls. A segmental block wall uses engineered, interlocking units (often with geogrid reinforcement) and can hold significantly taller grade changes. Which one you need depends on height and the load behind it.
Do retaining walls need drainage?
Yes. Water pressure building up behind a wall is the most common cause of failure. Every wall we build includes proper backfill and drainage so water has somewhere to go instead of pushing the wall out.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?
It depends on your town and the wall's height — many Central Massachusetts municipalities require a permit above a certain height. We'll flag it during your consult so there are no surprises.
Can a retaining wall fix a sloped or eroding yard?
Often, yes. An engineered wall can hold grade on a sloped lot, stop erosion, and create usable flat space above or below it. We'll assess the slope and drainage on-site before recommending a design.
